“La Llorona” is a tragic Mexican folk song that recounts the tale of “Llorona,” the weeping woman. In the legend, she had discovered her husband’s infidelity and in a fit of rage, drowned their children in a nearby river. Now, as a spirit, she is condemned to forever roam the river shores, in a fruitless search for her dead children. It is said that for any who see her, death surely will soon follow. This folk song has become a staple in celebrations of Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) and has appeared in several films including the 2017 Disney-Pixar film Coco.
